I never really know what kind of pictures I’m going to get when doing underwater photography of children. I think they’re all pretty fantastic, as they capture the fun of jumping into a pool, the carefree nature of youth and the unique beauty of underwater perspective, but there is no clear way to “direct” while underwater and usually the “poses” are just fun and unplanned. In most cases, arms and legs are splayed in whatever fashion my young clients can manage at the time. I love seeing what wacky contortions they come up with!
The beautiful little girl in the pictures below, however, was probably the most graceful child I’ve ever photographed underwater and appeared to be doing her own water ballet! Her flexibility and pointed toes are just perfection! We may have a future Olympic synchronized swimmer in our midst! I think she is just fabulous and hope you enjoy these shots as much as I do!
(Thanks to Wikipedia, I now know that at the turn of the 20th century, synchronized swimming was known as “water ballet”. The sport simultaneously developed in Canada and Germany, with the first competition held in Berlin in 1891. Not only a sport, it was also often a popular addition to Music Hall evenings. In some of London and Glasgow’s larger variety theaters there were on-stage water tanks for the purpose!)
