“Sweet Peas, on tiptoe for a flight,
With wings of gentle flush, o’er delicate white.” – Keats
There are several images that come to mind when I hear the term “Sweet Pea”. I see beautiful blooms covering a field; dainty flowers in vivid colors. I see peas in a pod, wrapped snuggly within their casing. I also picture the comically adorable baby from “Popeye” (Swee’ Pea)…left on Popeye’s doorstep; always crawling around in a bright red sleeping sack; completely unaware and narrowly escaping danger everywhere he goes. This precious sleeping baby evokes all of those images for me. The beautifully natural colors, the daintiness of a newborn cozily surrounded womblike by a blanket. The inadvertently mischievous baby from “Popeye” is nowhere to be seen at the moment, but this sweet sleeping baby is oblivious to everything around her, as only a baby can be (as Swee’ Pea was). Even awake, a baby’s ignorance of the world around them gives them a sense of invincibility. This innocent’s upcoming year will be filled with moments where she may try desperately to touch something hot or sharp, dive headfirst from her crib or off a couch, roughly grab the face of an unimpressed dog…completely unaware of any danger. But, for now, she is a sleeping sweet pea, protected by those who love her more than life itself.
