Although it’s tempting to post a fake pregnancy announcement or some kind of unbelievable promotion on this day that’s dedicated to pranks, I’m not going to do it. I’m always hesitant to believe anything I read that’s dated or appears on April 1st.
I was curious about the origins of this day, so I looked into it. According to Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University, the practice began during the reign of Constantine. A group of court jesters and fools told the Roman emperor that they could run the empire better than he could. Amused by this, Constantine allowed a jester named Kugel to be king for one day. During his day-long reign, Kugel decreed that the day should be filled with absurdity. People enjoyed it, so the custom became an annual event.
The Associated Press was responsible for bringing this explanation to the public’s attention in an article printed by many newspapers in 1983. The only problem? The professor made the whole thing up. It wasn’t until a couple weeks later that the AP realized they (along with everyone else who read and believed the faux history) had been victims of an April Fools’ joke themselves.
