When a woman becomes a mother, it can often feel as though her identity has been somewhat hijacked by the sweet little being(s) she brought into the world. She allows her own needs and desires to be secondary to those of the life she carried inside her for 9-ish months. Now, a mother should certainly put her children’s needs above any selfish desires of her own, but like the instructions for oxygen masks on a plane, you have to take care of yourself in order to be able to take care of anyone else.
It’s difficult water to navigate, trying to figure out who you are as a woman after having a baby. Finding the balance of self and others is difficult even if you aren’t a mother, but giving life to a child forever alters your sense of “self”. If you ever take a “selfie” it probably now includes your child as well, but it’s more likely that the photos you take are predominately of just your children.
With that said, I’m trying to make it a point during every family session in 2016 to take at least a few photos of each beautiful momma by herself. I hope this makes these women feel gorgeous, celebrated and loved for the amazing women they are! <3
