Houston Family Photographer | Houston Child Photographer | Baby Photographer Houston bio picture
  • Hi. I'm Amy...a photographer here in Houston, Texas. Families, babies and children are what make my heart sing. I like to think I catch the divine in the ordinary using natural light and everyday settings. My style is pretty simple. It’s a dab of traditional (for my youngest clients) mixed with modern lifestyle portraiture, indoors and out. Candid shots are my favorite. I want to capture a child’s spirit and a family's personality, even if that's not traditional smiles. My #1 goal...to photograph families in real life, not something that was imagined or 'created'...to not just tell a story or get a certain 'shot', but to tell your story though a collection of photographs, capturing all the joy that fills your soul. The greatest satisfaction for me, is knowing when you look at these photographs years from now, they will radiate of all the splendor that your children have brought to your life and will offer an heirloom of memories for generations to come. If you want photographs that are a little different and are not afraid to let lose a little with your kids, then I most certainly am the photographer for you! Just click that little contact tab above and let's book your session. ;-)

I love these peeps to the moon and back!

It was the most amazing evening….cool and just a hint of breeze.  The light was a photographer’s dream!  We made our way down to an area called The Waterway in a suburb of Houston, called The Woodlands…you may have heard of it.  It’s where the big Exxon campus is being built.  My family moved to this area about two years ago.  We were ‘inner loopers’….vowing at one time that we could never live in the burbs….ha!   Well, as happens with many couples…priorities change and we decided to move out and join the millions of other families that live in the burbs.  I can honestly say without a doubt that I love it here.  I miss our home in Montrose…it was built in 1920 and we have put a lot of heart and soul into and being right smack in the middle of the most incredible restaurants in the city is surely something we miss….but out here it just feels more like home.  Living this side of town has offered me a chance to be closer to some of my favorite people…and these are some of those people.  At least from where I stand, these guys make having three young kiddos look easy.  I said recently that when I was going through their pics it ***nearly*** made me want three kiddos of our own. ha.  I said….nearly.  But really, this crew is one I’d take in a heartbeat if I could.

Newborn Photography Houston Texas

I’ve said it before that I am no longer doing fancy prop newborn shoots….not that I did too much of that ever to begin with…and although those types of images are nice and there is most certainly a HUGE market for those, I’ve chosen to only use blankets and wraps in my sessions….and my newborn photography sessions will not focus on spending time getting a baby to sleep…HOWEVER, if your baby is brand spanking new and they want to sleep during our session, fantastic….we will get all photos of your baby sleeping. ;-)  And if your baby is awake, we will get awake photos.  Either way, I assure you that we will get the most wonderful photographs of your little one!!!

Back to this beautiful baby girl~

I’ve known her mom since high school.  We were even roommates our first year of college in the dorm.  We both ended up having our babies later in life which I love because it is so nice to share in these milestones with such a long term friend. Now if I could just get her and her husband to move to the Northside, I’d be so happy!  hehe

Just a little note:  if you want more sleepy baby photos, it will be vital that you schedule your baby’s sessions within 5-6 days of birth, when they are the sleepiest.

Many babies (younger than 2 weeks) will fall asleep on their own at least once during our session, but it is never guaranteed. ;-)

Ever wonder what a full family session looks like?  It’s about 35-40 photos of your family in a variety of settings.  The session lasts about 45 minutes to an hour.  I don’t like to rush things, but am making a big effort these days to be respectful of your family’s time.  I do like to ‘direct’ the session somewhat.  You’ll never need to worry about what to do.  I had a client recently tell me how much she enjoyed being photographed by me because she can just relax with her family (relatively speaking, as there is always at least a hint of anticipation and anxiety when getting your pic done) during the session.  Part of this is because I’m just a little bit of a control freak.  ha!  Plus, I want you and your family to look your very best in our photographs.  You look good…your family looks good…and of course, I look good…a win win for everyone, right?;-)

I strive to give my clients a mix of some more traditional style photographs where everyone is looking at the camera, but mostly I like to focus (and get the most images) of interaction…funny faces, serious faces and capturing emotion between family members.

Anyway, I have known this mom for many years.  When I worked my ‘corporate’ job, she and I worked together. She likely knows more about me than she would like (worked together over 6 years) and yet still trusted me to take her families photographs this season.  Brave….or maybe crazy.  hehe

I had such a great time with this crew.  I recall when her kids were much younger and would come to our office.  Now they are like little adults now.  (sniff, sniff)  Time flies when you are having fun, eh?

Babies are funny….I recall in my early days spending way too much time trying to get a baby to sleep for photos (which I do NOT do anymore) and then you have sweet babies (well past the newborn stage) who just will sleep where ever their heart’s desire.  So was the case with this sweet baby girl!  She needed a little nap before her photos.  And of course, we could not resist some photos of her sleeping.  hehe

Is she the most adorable happy baby or what!!??  While awake, the smiles were contagious!  Now it reminds me of our baby boy who is very much a smiler….probably because I have a big smile…..and seem to be smiling at him basically all the time. :-)  I’d like to think he gets that from me.

Anyways…back to this beautiful gem!  And as if her smile did not send you into the most joyful state….oh…that hair!  That glorious hair!!  Just fantastic beyond measure!!  I see it now….Pantene for babies….she most certainly would make the best hair model!!  <3

I’ve had the privilege of getting to know this family this last year.  When we first met, we were photographing this little guys big sister for her birthday.  This family had just found out they were expecting their second bundle of joy first of July 2013, only a few weeks after our little guy was due. ;-)  We later found out we were both having little boys, which was fun.

I love unique baby names…maybe because my name is so terribly generic.  I know and knew so many ‘Amy’s’ growing up….I love my name because it’s what my parent’s chose for me, but it would have been very cool to have a very unique name.  When we name our son, I had to find the happy compromise with my husband…so we named him Nathaniel, which is so fitting to him and I love it…

BUT this sweet baby has a very cool name…and unique…at least here in the states.  His name is Gianluca.  A name I’d never heard before.  This family is Italian, so it is very fitting. ;-)  Anyway, is he a handsome guy or what? Watch out ladies.  hehe

And during our shoot, mom didn’t plan on being in any of the pics, but I had to snap a few and I’m so glad I did!  Perfection in every way!

And please keep in mind that the entire session was devoted to this little guy….mom was only in a few shots.  This is how we were able to get more variety of shots of  baby only…and he was brand new when we shot these, so he was very sleepy the entire session, hence why basically all his pics are him sleeping.  But remember, if you want sleeping baby photos of your newborn, it is most likely we can get those only if your baby’s session is done at 6 days old or less and even then, I can not guarantee your baby will fall asleep during our session.  But rest assured, we will get beautiful images of your awake baby if they are not sleepy. ;-)

Father and Son Photographs Houston

Don’t hate me, but I’m coming clean…I’m not a sports fan….not in the least.  Growing up, I recall my dad, on occasion, would watch gold and maybe a little boxing….but that was basically it.  I know, I know…I’m an American and I don’t like sports…..shame on me.  HA!  If you asked me to name football teams, for example….I **might** be able to rattle off 5 teams…and maybe one of those would actually be a baseball team….I know….tragic.

However, if you are a sports fan…which I would dare say that most warm blooded Americans are, in particular, a football fan…great!  I won’t hold it against you.  hehe

And furthermore, if your hubby is a huge fan and you need something to bribe him with (to be fully on board with family photos) then by all means, let’s put on those jerseys.

As was the case with this dad….who wanted a few pics of him and his son in their Pittsburgh Steelers jerseys.  They are huge fans…huge!  They made site like this (most suitably called ‘fanatics’ for them.  Check it out here.  Little guy gave us about 2 minutes and these are what we got.

It’s good to see father and son photos!

Family Photographer Houston Texas

My last grand parent passed away when I was in High-school.  I never had the opportunity to know three of my grandparents….my mom’s parents only lived before I arrived.  I did get know my grandmother, my dad’s mom at least a little.  Now that I am older, I realize there was so much I never knew about my grandmother who was living.  I was a kid and as many kids do, I took for granted that even just one grandparent was living.  I think now of all the questions I would love to ask her now…all the stories that I could have heard first hand about her life….her loves….family….everything.  If we are being honest here, it makes me feel terribly guilty for not making more of an effort to know her more while she was here on this earth. :-(I try not to dwell on it too much, but what I would give to have her back if even for a day!!

I only have a handful of photographs of me with my grandmother…oh, how I wish there were more.

When Miss S contacted me to get some photographs of her children with both their grandfathers, I was so excited!  I so enjoy these sessions.  The kiddos gave us only about 2-3 minutes with each grand…I mean, they are small children so we were so happy to get what we did, but I know that these photographs mean so much to this family!  And no doubt, they will be cherished for many generations to come!

If you are considering having an extended family photography session, please don’t hesitate to get your own family memories such as these!

Carpe diem!!!!!

Engagement Photographs Houston, TX

I shoot very few weddings.  This is by choice.  I really enjoy shooting weddings, but spending an entire day away from my family….well, it’s just not something I want to do on a regular basis, as you can likely understand. ;-)

But I do take on weddings, just depends on the wedding.  I prefer to only shoot smaller weddings and ones where I can shoot at least many of the photographs outdoors.  This is just that wedding.  These two humored me and let me takes some shots in their new home before we ventured outside.  I had such a lovely time with this couple.  They are so fun and easy going.  I’m going to break up their pics into two posts because there were so many.  hehe

I can’t wait to photograph their wedding next month at The Heritage Society Chapel at Sam Houston Park.

Congrats you two!!

Great “in love” pics!!!

Houston Texas Child Photographer

Most of the time, there is a bit of a warming up period during a photography session.  This pretty much happens during the first maybe 5-10 minutes of our session.  It is most common when I’m shooting a new family that I have never met or photographed before.  During this time, it is not only about my clients become more comfortable with me, but it’s about me observing and listening to get a feel for the direction I feel is best suited for our time together.  This also happens with returning clients, but it is much less common.  It is also a good reason (among many) for having your family photographs done at least once a year.  Sure, it’s always going to be somewhat awkward.  Even for professional photographers, it is very difficult to be in front of the camera, but the more you allow your kids and/or family to be photographed, the more comfortable everyone will be when the time comes…and more importantly, the more beautiful the images when everyone is just being themselves. :-D

However, this family, was the exception.  They were so comfortable and fluid from the start.  I’m sure there are a list of reasons we could come up with as to why they were the exception, but it really doesn’t matter.  They just were.  It was so refreshing to meet this family and be able to photograph their family this season.  Thank you guys for being you and just letting me capture that!;-)

There are some images that I keep going back to over and over and looking…wondering what it is about the photo that I love so much.  I mean, sure, I’m a sucker for photographs in general…and there are soooooo many photographs that I love.  It is ridiculous really.  HA!  I love photographs, especially those of families or children.  This baby’s photograph was just one of those pictures.  Of course, there were a number of photographs from this session that I really love, those for another blog post, but today I just want to post one image…and in black and white.  This sweet boy (and his brother) always have the most wonderful outfits.  Their momma has great style, not only in clothing but you should see the most wonderfully, understated decor in their home….OH MY!! ;-) Anyways, this little guy’s outfit was so adorable!  I most certainly want one for our sweet baby boy when he is a little older.  The photo is a bit unconventional….focused on just a sweet, cuddly baby hand…..and adorable, pinchable cheeks…and just a teaser of those beautiful eyelashes.  He’s doing what most babies do….putting something in his mouth.  HA!  Luckily in this case it is a little cookie we were using as bribery.  I can’t wait to share with you more images from this session soon!

There are so many session that are in the blog que.  Because of the holiday season, I’m basically focused on getting galleries done as quickly as I can and this means that not only the blog gets neglected, but also my Facebook page. Believe it or not, both of those actually take up a lot of extra time, but rest assured, by the middle of Dec., there will be LOTS of new content coming to the blog…so be sure to stay tuned for an abundance of lovely images.
