Houston Family Photographer | Houston Child Photographer | Baby Photographer Houston bio picture
  • Hi. I'm Amy...a photographer here in Houston, Texas. Families, babies and children are what make my heart sing. I like to think I catch the divine in the ordinary using natural light and everyday settings. My style is pretty simple. It’s a dab of traditional (for my youngest clients) mixed with modern lifestyle portraiture, indoors and out. Candid shots are my favorite. I want to capture a child’s spirit and a family's personality, even if that's not traditional smiles. My #1 goal...to photograph families in real life, not something that was imagined or 'created'...to not just tell a story or get a certain 'shot', but to tell your story though a collection of photographs, capturing all the joy that fills your soul. The greatest satisfaction for me, is knowing when you look at these photographs years from now, they will radiate of all the splendor that your children have brought to your life and will offer an heirloom of memories for generations to come. If you want photographs that are a little different and are not afraid to let lose a little with your kids, then I most certainly am the photographer for you! Just click that little contact tab above and let's book your session. ;-)

My last grand parent passed away when I was in High-school.  I never had the opportunity to know three of my grandparents….my mom’s parents only lived before I arrived.  I did get know my grandmother, my dad’s mom at least a little.  Now that I am older, I realize there was so much I never knew about my grandmother who was living.  I was a kid and as many kids do, I took for granted that even just one grandparent was living.  I think now of all the questions I would love to ask her now…all the stories that I could have heard first hand about her life….her loves….family….everything.  If we are being honest here, it makes me feel terribly guilty for not making more of an effort to know her more while she was here on this earth. :-(I try not to dwell on it too much, but what I would give to have her back if even for a day!!

I only have a handful of photographs of me with my grandmother…oh, how I wish there were more.

When Miss S contacted me to get some photographs of her children with both their grandfathers, I was so excited!  I so enjoy these sessions.  The kiddos gave us only about 2-3 minutes with each grand…I mean, they are small children so we were so happy to get what we did, but I know that these photographs mean so much to this family!  And no doubt, they will be cherished for many generations to come!

If you are considering having an extended family photography session, please don’t hesitate to get your own family memories such as these!

Carpe diem!!!!!

I shoot very few weddings.  This is by choice.  I really enjoy shooting weddings, but spending an entire day away from my family….well, it’s just not something I want to do on a regular basis, as you can likely understand. ;-)

But I do take on weddings, just depends on the wedding.  I prefer to only shoot smaller weddings and ones where I can shoot at least many of the photographs outdoors.  This is just that wedding.  These two humored me and let me takes some shots in their new home before we ventured outside.  I had such a lovely time with this couple.  They are so fun and easy going.  I’m going to break up their pics into two posts because there were so many.  hehe

I can’t wait to photograph their wedding next month at The Heritage Society Chapel at Sam Houston Park.

Congrats you two!!

Great “in love” pics!!!

Houston Texas Child Photographer

Most of the time, there is a bit of a warming up period during a photography session.  This pretty much happens during the first maybe 5-10 minutes of our session.  It is most common when I’m shooting a new family that I have never met or photographed before.  During this time, it is not only about my clients become more comfortable with me, but it’s about me observing and listening to get a feel for the direction I feel is best suited for our time together.  This also happens with returning clients, but it is much less common.  It is also a good reason (among many) for having your family photographs done at least once a year.  Sure, it’s always going to be somewhat awkward.  Even for professional photographers, it is very difficult to be in front of the camera, but the more you allow your kids and/or family to be photographed, the more comfortable everyone will be when the time comes…and more importantly, the more beautiful the images when everyone is just being themselves. :-D

However, this family, was the exception.  They were so comfortable and fluid from the start.  I’m sure there are a list of reasons we could come up with as to why they were the exception, but it really doesn’t matter.  They just were.  It was so refreshing to meet this family and be able to photograph their family this season.  Thank you guys for being you and just letting me capture that!;-)

There are some images that I keep going back to over and over and looking…wondering what it is about the photo that I love so much.  I mean, sure, I’m a sucker for photographs in general…and there are soooooo many photographs that I love.  It is ridiculous really.  HA!  I love photographs, especially those of families or children.  This baby’s photograph was just one of those pictures.  Of course, there were a number of photographs from this session that I really love, those for another blog post, but today I just want to post one image…and in black and white.  This sweet boy (and his brother) always have the most wonderful outfits.  Their momma has great style, not only in clothing but you should see the most wonderfully, understated decor in their home….OH MY!! ;-) Anyways, this little guy’s outfit was so adorable!  I most certainly want one for our sweet baby boy when he is a little older.  The photo is a bit unconventional….focused on just a sweet, cuddly baby hand…..and adorable, pinchable cheeks…and just a teaser of those beautiful eyelashes.  He’s doing what most babies do….putting something in his mouth.  HA!  Luckily in this case it is a little cookie we were using as bribery.  I can’t wait to share with you more images from this session soon!

There are so many session that are in the blog que.  Because of the holiday season, I’m basically focused on getting galleries done as quickly as I can and this means that not only the blog gets neglected, but also my Facebook page. Believe it or not, both of those actually take up a lot of extra time, but rest assured, by the middle of Dec., there will be LOTS of new content coming to the blog…so be sure to stay tuned for an abundance of lovely images.

Houston Family Photographer seeks assistant

I need an assistant.

lifestyle photographer the woodlands

Yep…that’s right.  I’m looking to hire a photography assistant beginning early 2014.  This is a paid position and I’m not exactly sure of number of bookings a week because it varies, but I can guarantee a minimum number with the opportunity to go over.  I’m estimating between 10-18 hours per week, give or take.  I will be interviewing and not just hiring someone for the sake of hiring.  I need just the right person.  This is a contract, part-time position, of course….paid by the hour.

Requirements (for now) are:

1) Must have at least two years working with children.

2) Must live in The Woodlands, TX or within a 5 mile radius, no exceptions.

3) Must have reliable transportation and be timely, to either meet me on location or at my home to travel with me on shoots.

4) Must be easy going, fun, take direction well but have some self directed initiative.

5) Must be physically able to keep up with me during sessions.  And trust me, I am all over the place.  The perfect candidate must be in reasonable physical condition…and tennis shoes are required (no joking here)

I would prefer someone who is not interested in photography.  This will not, and never be, a photography mentoring type position at all.  This is a great position for maybe a student or retiree who just wants a little extra spending money each week.  Someone who enjoys kids and the spontaneity that comes with little ones.  You will be going on actual photo shoots with me. You will be in charge of helping carry gear and such.  You must also be able to act like silly and do funny things during the sessions….including singing and dancing, if needed be.

To apply, please email me at info@photosbyamyleigh.com

The Woodlands Texas Baby Photographer

I love albums….in particular, really nice albums.  I offer my clients just that and they are more affordable than you might think.  Albums are a fantastic way to showcase many images from your session in print…all in one place.  These come in a variety of colors….leather or fabric options.  You can also choose imprinting and there is an option for a photo on the front as well.  The photos really do not do service to these books.  This one is size 10×10, but there are many sizes to choose from.  The pages are lay flat and are very thick.  Of course the image color is top notch, too!  You will not be disappointed in these albums!

This particular album was one I made recently for a client that displays photographs over the course of their son’s first year.  I photographed their son when he was a newborn, at 4 months, 8 months and then a year.  Babies grow and change so much during the first year of life and this family will have their favorite milestone images in this album which is sure to be enjoyed for years to come.

This is a moment that just happened.  The photo was not planned.  We were in the middle of trying to get a different photograph and then this moment just happened.  It literally lasted only about 10 seconds….it is moments like this that it is so important to be ready as a photographer.  To not be so caught up in something else….to miss a memory like this.  I mean, I can’t get every single moment.  I’m one person.  Sure, there are many that I miss.  But I really have been striving more than ever to get many captures like this from each session.  To always be ready for the unexpected.  And these are some of the most wonderful images to display in your home as large as you can. ;-)

In this case, I chose an office setting.  And this is what a 30×40 canvas would look like on an office wall.  It really warms up the space, right? Makes me very happy! ;-)

This family is loads of fun!  I love when families are comfortable with themselves and truly enjoy life.  You know the saying, ‘a barrel of laughs’?  Well, that about sums this crew up!

A spunky four year old and two, 2yr old twins….well, as you can imagine…NEVER a dull moment in this home!

So this image is what I would call a lifestyle photograph.  What do I mean when I say lifestyle photograph?  Well, it likely has a variety of meaning to different photographers, but I feel that lifestyle photography is an amazing blend of both photojournalism style photos and some ‘semi’ posed, traditional portraiture.  This means that I will direct our session….throwing out ideas….putting your family (or child/children) in a sort of general spot and then give a bit of direction….but then the rest is pretty fluid and spontaneous.

What is the point of such photography?  Well, it is about capturing more of the unexpected.  It is more about NOT everyone looking at the camera.  It is about documenting more emotion….more authenticity.  It is about life.

Think about your family in a storybook.  It may be a funny thought to many, but seriously…just humor me. :-)

Think about each page of the book.  The images that would truly tell the story as it is happening.  It is unlikely that you would fill a book with images where everyone in the family is looking at the camera with the perfect smile.  That story would be terribly boring and quite frankly, the I would go so far as to say that the reader would view such a story as completely unbelievable.  Sure, you may have one or two of those….but the photos that would tell your story would be a variety of different images….and would include many different faces.  Serious faces….funny faces…happy faces….and maybe a sad face or two.   Hopefully, you can at least sort of see what I’m getting out here.

And furthermore….I want to photograph your family in a way that you can really display these images on your walls and enjoy them as not just a photograph…but possible as a piece of art.

In your home, such an image could be displayed as such…..this is a 20X30 Organic Bloom ‘Fonzie” frame.

This family is so cute! Love the kids smile!

Baby Photography Houston TX

So many amazingly beautiful images from this session!  I’ll have to break them up into different posts.  hehe

She is truly as divine as this first image shows.  You guys know I love photographing children and babies of all ages.  These days, maybe because our little guy is a little over five months old now, but I am loving the 8-10 month babies!  I think it’s because there are so many milestones around this time…sitting up….eating ‘real’ food….really responding to the world around them.  It is such a fantastic site to watch these little people grow….and so quickly.  But not only are they growing…but hopefully, we, as parents are growing….surely a little wiser…even amidst the baby fog.  ha!

Okay….back to this session.  I’ve said it before, but I do love so much photographing families in their homes.  It is (most often) where children feel most comfortable.  Even though this sweet gal was trying to recover from a cold, you really would not know it because she is still so happy.  But I think it is because she is in the place where she spends most of her life these days.  It is where her family shares the most intimate moments.  It is where the most wonderful memories are being made.
